DC-1, 4 String: For Dan, bassist with Kilbox

Dan already purchased my 6 string SC-1 from me, and I'm building him a new 4 string DC-1 to go with it.

Here are the specs:

Neck:
  • 9 piece; wenge center, two purpleheart stringers and bubinga outers with thin maple accents
  • 34” scale, stabilized macassar ebony fingerboard
  • Custom celtic knot inlay in white mother of pearl over entire fingerboard
  • Maple accent layer between fingerboard and neck
  • Black Limba headstock to match body wings
  • Spalted Curly rock maple headstock overlay with purpleheart accent layer to match body
  • Brass nut


  • Body:
  • Black Limba body wings and back
  • Spalted Curly rock maple top with purpleheart accent layer
  • Top covers entire body, neck does not show through


  • Hardware and Electronics:
  • Black Hipshot ultralight tuners and hipshot model A bridge, solid brass, with string through option
  • Two Bartolini P-Bass® Pickups, offset/staggered setup
  • Aguilar OBP-3 preamp, with bypass switch
  • Wired for stereo outputs with neck pickup as passive in stereo mode, both pickups active in mono mode, wired volume-volume-treble-mid-bass

    Woods are in and the fingerboard inlay is completed.

    Inlay in paper
    Here is the inlay laid out on the fingerboard in paper. It's a mirror image Celtic knot, meeting at the midpoint of the fingerboard just past the 8th fret.

    When I first put the neck woods together, I felt that the colors didn't have enough seperation (as in the first pic below), so I sent Dan the second pic with thin maple accent layers added which I felt really made the wood colors pop! He agreed so I glued it up as a new 9 piece neck instead of the original 5 piece. I've got more pics of this bass further along and will post them soon.

    26 October - Finish and waxing is done, starting to build it up. Earlier this year I decided to replace the typical soft metal pickup height wood screws with steel allen head machine screws. Now, going one step further, I have decided to use threaded inserts for my pickup height screws in addition to the allen head screws. A couple of the pictures below show these being installed in Dans bass.
